What the sources say
The sources do record the hesitation — Huang Chong urged him again and again to seize the defiles at speed, and he did not advance. What followed was not flight: he killed the surrender envoy, stood and fought at Mianzhu, and died on the field with his son, while a grandson of Zhang Fei and a son of Huang Quan fell in the same battle.
